QUEENSLAND RAILWAYS

 

Today the Queensland Railways operate a modern fleet of high-power, 1067mm gauge, diesel and electric locomotives to move large tonnages across the state. Brad Peadon has compiled this listing of locos in use in Queensland.

DH29 sits outside the workshops of the Bundaberg Foundry in 1996 awaiting conversion to 610mm gauge. This loco was one of 32 DH class locos purchased by various Queensland sugar mills for use on their cane lines. The 73 DH class (465hp Caterpillar powered diesel hydraulic locos) were built by Walkers Ltd of Maryborough Queensland and all were in service by 1974. Today only DH72 and DH73 remain in service, the remainder having been sold or leased to other operators.

1620 hauls a tour train on the Yeppoon branch in October 1996. This loco was one of 34 862hp units built by English Electric for the Queensland Railways in 1968/69. Withdrawals commenced in 1983 when 1624 was written off after an accident. In 1995 6 members of this class were sold to the Phillipines and in December of that year the last remaining members were withdrawn. 1650 has been preserved.

1515/1530 haul an up ballast train through Rockhampton. 29 1500hp locos, based on the EMD 12-545E engine, were built by Clyde for the Queensland Railways and all were in service by August 1969. Today 25 remain in service and 1 has been sold to New Zealand.
